Comparison
What is the best mushroom coffee in the UK? We put four brands side by side: Spacegoods, Dirtea, Mushroom Cups and Brainstoorm, our own. There is no single winner: it all depends on what you expect from your cup, whether that is the mushroom dose, the caffeine, the price or the right to change your mind. Here are the figures each brand states, in one table.
Who is writing: Mush n Go makes Brainstoorm, one of the brands compared here. This page sets out what each brand states on its website and, for Brainstoorm, the technical data sheet from our contract manufacturer. Figures recorded on 6 October 2026. We have no connection with the other brands.
Brainstoorm coffee flavour
Lion's mane, cordyceps and chaga from the fruiting body, maca, ashwagandha and roasted chicory. The taste of coffee, without the jitters.

Not a ranking, a choice for each criterion.
We make one of these brands: putting ourselves at the top would make no sense. We would rather tell you who stands out on each criterion, with the figures to back it up, including when it is not us.
- To cut down on caffeine: Brainstoorm, 20 mg per cup, the lowest level among the flagship products compared here. Spacegoods also offers a caffeine-free version.
- For the highest dose of lion's mane: Dirtea, with 1,000 mg of extract per cup. Spacegoods states 1,000 mg, without specifying whether this is a weight of extract or an equivalent.
- For the lowest price per cup: Dirtea, at €0.75 without a subscription.
- For a recipe written out line by line: Brainstoorm, which gives the weight of each extract and the part of the mushroom used, and adds maca and ashwagandha.
- To try it risk-free: Brainstoorm, refunded for 60 days, even once the pouch is open.
How we compared
The same criteria, for every brand.
We selected the brands that come up in searches for mushroom coffee in the UK or, failing that, are among the most searched for in Europe, and whose official product page we were able to read. For each one, we recorded the flagship product, on 6 October 2026, on the brand's website.
What we compare
The mushrooms and their dose per cup, the caffeine, the price per cup without a subscription, the best listed price and the guarantee.
What we do not compare
Taste, which is a personal matter, and the effects people feel, which no label can measure.
Where the prices come from
From each brand's home store, converted into euros at the European Central Bank rate of 6 October 2026. Brainstoorm: France store.
The detail of each set of figures, with its sources, is in the brand's review page, linked further down.
The comparison table
Four brands, five columns.
One row per brand, for one cup. When a brand does not state a piece of information, we say exactly that.
| Brand | Mushrooms, per cup | Caffeine | Price per cup | Money-back guarantee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brainstoorm | 3 mushrooms, 370 mg of extracts | 20 mg | €1.42 | 60 days, even once the pouch is open |
| Spacegoods | 3 mushrooms, 1,000 mg stated for each, extract or equivalent not specified | 120 mg | €1.92 | 60 days |
| Dirtea | 1 mushroom: organic lion's mane, 1,000 mg of extract | 50 mg | €0.75 | 30 days, unopened product |
| Mushroom Cups | 2 mushrooms per variant, 800 mg of extracts | 66 mg | €1.32 | 60 days shown, 30 days in the returns policy |

A figure cannot be read on its own. Brainstoorm's 370 mg of extracts correspond to 3,000 mg of dried-mushroom equivalent, and its cup adds 375 mg of maca extract, ashwagandha and 6 mg of vitamin B5, which contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal mental performance.
Extract or equivalent
Two numbers for the same mushroom: how to read them.
On a mushroom coffee label, the same ingredient can appear with two very different weights. Both are correct; they simply do not measure the same thing. Some brands state the weight of extract, others the dried-mushroom equivalent. In our table, the weights are weights of extract, unless stated otherwise.
The extract is what is in the cup
An extract is a concentrate. With a 10:1 ratio, it took 10 g of dried mushroom to obtain 1 g of powder.
The equivalent is the starting weight
“1,000 mg dry equivalent” with a 10:1 ratio means 100 mg of extract in the cup.
The part of the mushroom matters
The fruiting body is the mushroom itself; the mycelium is its network of filaments. Both are used, and a clear label says which.
The rule for comparing
Always the same column on both sides: extract against extract, equivalent against equivalent. That is what our table does.
Brand by brand
What each brand does well, and who it is for.
Every brand has its own logic and its own audience. Here, for each one, is who it is aimed at and its key figures, with a link to our detailed review.
Spacegoods
Rainbow Dust is for you if you want to keep a real kick (120 mg of caffeine), a well-dosed KSM-66® ashwagandha, and a wide choice of flavours, including a decaf.

Dirtea
Dirtea is for you if lion's mane is what interests you above all, if you want certified organic and an extract standardised for beta-glucans, and real coffee in your cup.
Mushroom Cups
Mushroom Cups is for you if you are set on a real organic coffee, a list of three ingredients, and the convenience of a single-serve sachet you can slip into a bag.
Why Brainstoorm
Less caffeine, and everything in writing.
Brainstoorm is not the most highly dosed mushroom coffee in this comparison, nor the cheapest as a one-off purchase. It is the one we designed for people who want to keep the coffee ritual without the racing heart at 10 am or the 3 pm slump.
- 20 mg of caffeine per cup, released gradually: four times less than an espresso.
- Three mushrooms from the fruiting body, 1,000 mg of equivalent each, including 250 mg of cordyceps extract.
- 6 mg of vitamin B5 in a single cup, i.e. 100% of the reference intake: it contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
- No mushroom taste: roasted chicory brings the roundness and bitterness of a coffee.
- 60-day money-back guarantee: you taste, you decide.
More than 50,000 people have already replaced one of their cups with Brainstoorm, and rate it 4.8 out of 5.
Before you start
- Most mushroom coffees contain caffeine and are not recommended for children or for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
- Brainstoorm is not recommended if you have a thyroid, liver or heart condition: ask your doctor for advice.
- A food supplement is not a substitute for a varied diet. Do not exceed the stated daily dose.
Your questions
All about choosing a mushroom coffee.
What is the best mushroom coffee?
It depends on what you are looking for. For the dose of lion's mane, Dirtea stands out in our comparison; for the price per cup, Dirtea; for drinking less caffeine with a fully quantified recipe, Brainstoorm.
Which mushroom coffee has the least caffeine?
Among the flagship products compared here, Brainstoorm has the lowest level: 20 mg per cup, in a microencapsulated form that is released gradually. An espresso contains around 80 mg. Spacegoods also offers a caffeine-free version.
What is the cheapest mushroom coffee?
As a one-off purchase, the lowest price per cup in this comparison is Dirtea's: €0.75. On a three-month subscription, Brainstoorm works out at €0.78 per cup.
How do you compare the doses of two mushroom coffees?
By comparing like with like on both sides: weight of extract with weight of extract, dried-mushroom equivalent with equivalent. Also check the part of the mushroom used, fruiting body or mycelium, and whether the dose is given per cup.
Does mushroom coffee really contain coffee?
Not always. Most brands start from a coffee, instant or ground, to which they add mushrooms. Brainstoorm contains none: its taste comes from roasted chicory, and its 20 mg of caffeine are added separately.
Can you try a mushroom coffee before committing?
Look at the guarantee and its conditions: duration, whether the product may be opened, any fees deducted. Mush n Go refunds Brainstoorm for 60 days, even after the pouch has been opened. Each brand's conditions are in the table.
