Café des Guerriers review

Café Parfait, from the French brand Café des Guerriers, is an organic instant mushroom coffee: 3.5 g of coffee, four mushrooms and two plants per cup, in four flavours. It is a recipe generous in mushrooms and certified organic, with the caffeine of half an espresso. Brainstoorm makes a different choice: no coffee, extracts with their ratio written down, 20 mg of caffeine, and the right to open the pouch before deciding. Here are the two recipes, line by line.

Our verdict in brief

An organic coffee rich in mushrooms, or a light cup with standardised extracts.

Café Parfait and Brainstoorm have a lot in common: mushrooms from the fruiting body, ashwagandha, maca, and both are made in France. Café Parfait puts in more mushrooms by weight and carries the organic label; it also keeps the coffee, and its caffeine. Brainstoorm contains no coffee: it relies on concentrated extracts, vitamin B5 dosed at 100% of the reference intake and 20 mg of caffeine.

  • Brainstoorm is for you if you want to cut your caffeine right down (20 mg), know the ratio of every extract, and be able to open the pouch before deciding whether to keep it.
  • Café Parfait is for you if organic is your first criterion, if you want to keep the taste and caffeine of a real coffee, and if you like choosing between four flavours.
  • On price, Café Parfait is slightly cheaper: €1.30 per cup as a one-off purchase versus €1.42 for Brainstoorm, and €0.71 versus €0.78 at the best subscription price.

The ingredients in detail

What is in a cup of Café Parfait.

The product page publishes a table per 5 g serving, ingredient by ingredient: that is welcome transparency. It specifies that the mushrooms come from the fruiting body. It does not, however, give the ratio or the beta-glucan content, except for the chaga, standardised to 30% polysaccharides.

Organic instant coffee 3,500 mg arabica and robusta
Lion's mane 500 mg fruiting body powder

The table is the same for all four flavours and does not mention any flavouring. Depending on where you look, the brand states 1,500 mg or 3,200 mg of adaptogens per cup: we use the table.

Extract or equivalent

Two numbers for the same mushroom: how to read them.

On a mushroom coffee label, the same ingredient can appear with two very different weights. Both are correct; they do not measure the same thing. Café Parfait mainly states powder weights; Brainstoorm states extracts, with their dried-mushroom equivalent. The two numbers cannot be compared directly: we give both for Brainstoorm.

The extract is what is in the cup

An extract is a concentrate. With a 10:1 ratio, it took 10 g of dried mushroom to obtain 1 g of powder.

The equivalent is the starting weight

“1,000 mg dry equivalent” with a 10:1 ratio means 100 mg of extract in the cup.

The part of the mushroom matters

The fruiting body is the mushroom itself; the mycelium is its network of filaments. Both are used, and a clear label says which.

The rule for comparing

Always the same column on both sides: extract against extract, equivalent against equivalent. That is what the following table does.

Dosages compared

Brainstoorm and Café des Guerriers, line by line.

For Brainstoorm, the table gives the actual weight of extract and then, in brackets, the dried-plant equivalent. For Café Parfait, the stated weight. Brainstoorm coffee flavour: 6 g serving. Café Parfait: 5 g serving.

Per cup Brainstoorm coffee Café Parfait
Caffeine 20 mg, microencapsulated 48 to 60 mg depending on the page, from coffee
Lion's mane 100 mg of 10:1 extract (1,000 mg) 500 mg of powder
Cordyceps 250 mg of 4:1 extract (1,000 mg) 300 mg of powder
Chaga 20 mg of 50:1 extract (1,000 mg) 300 mg of extract, ratio not stated
Reishi absent 200 mg of powder
Maca 375 mg of extract (3,000 mg) 100 mg
Ashwagandha 40 mg of extract 100 mg
Vitamin B5 6 mg, 100% of the reference intake absent

By weight, Café Parfait puts more mushrooms in the cup, and it adds reishi. Yet a weight of powder and a weight of extract do not measure the same thing: 375 mg of 8:1 maca extract in Brainstoorm represents 3,000 mg of root, versus 100 mg in Café Parfait. Brainstoorm writes down the ratio of each extract and provides 6 mg of vitamin B5, i.e. 100% of the reference intake: it contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal mental performance.

Caffeine

Half an espresso on one side, 20 mg on the other.

Café Parfait contains 3.5 g of instant coffee per cup. Its caffeine is stated as 60 mg on the product page, around 50 mg on the label and around 48 mg in the website FAQ. That is a little over half an espresso, which contains around 80 mg according to the European Food Safety Authority.

Brainstoorm contains no coffee. Each cup provides 20 mg of NewCaff® microencapsulated caffeine, coated so that it is released gradually, and its taste comes from roasted chicory.

One cup a day

Café Parfait: 48 to 60 mg. Brainstoorm: 20 mg. The EFSA benchmark for an adult is 400 mg a day, from all sources combined.

With your usual coffees

Two espressos plus one Café Parfait: around 210 to 220 mg. The same two espressos plus one Brainstoorm: around 180 mg.

In the afternoon

At 20 mg, a cup of Brainstoorm after lunch weighs four times less on your evening than an espresso.

Which one to choose

An organic mushroom coffee, or an alternative to coffee?

If you want to keep drinking coffee, organic, with a good dose of mushrooms and a choice of flavours, Café Parfait is a serious option. If you are looking precisely to move away from coffee, without the racing heart at 10 am or the slump at 3 pm, you are the person we created Brainstoorm for.

  • 20 mg of caffeine per cup, released gradually: two to three times less than Café Parfait.
  • Three mushrooms from the fruiting body, 1,000 mg of equivalent each, including 250 mg of cordyceps extract.
  • Concentrated extracts, ratio written down, including 375 mg of maca extract, i.e. 3,000 mg of root.
  • 6 mg of vitamin B5 in a single cup, i.e. 100% of the reference intake: it contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
  • No mushroom taste: roasted chicory brings the roundness and bitterness of a coffee.
  • 60-day money-back guarantee: you taste, you decide.
