Coffee 2.0 review

Coffee 2.0 is a very complete mushroom coffee: 7 mushrooms, 18 ingredients and around 100 mg of caffeine per cup, as much as a regular coffee. It is a good choice if you want to keep all your caffeine. If, on the other hand, you are looking to cut down, Brainstoorm contains 20 mg, five times less, in a vegan recipe with no animal collagen. We compared the two labels line by line, using the actual doses of extract.

Our verdict in brief

Two good products, for two opposite needs.

Coffee 2.0 and Brainstoorm look alike on the shelf: a powder to stir in, mushrooms, plants. The difference comes down to one number: caffeine. Coffee 2.0 delivers as much as a coffee. Brainstoorm was designed to deliver five times less.

  • Brainstoorm is for you if coffee makes you jittery or eats into your sleep, if you eat vegan, or if you like to know exactly what is in your cup: eleven ingredients, each with its dose.
  • Coffee 2.0 is for you if you want as many mushrooms as possible, want to keep your usual dose of caffeine, and do not mind bovine collagen.
  • On price, Coffee 2.0 is slightly cheaper as a one-off purchase (€1.33 per cup versus €1.42). Brainstoorm pulls ahead on subscription (€1.00, then €0.78 over 3 months).

The ingredients in detail

What is in one serving of Coffee 2.0.

Tasty Dose states the dose of each ingredient and, for the mushrooms, the extraction ratio. That is a real plus: many brands settle for a “mushroom blend” with no figures. Here is the full breakdown.

Ingredient Stated dose Ratio Actual extract
Lion's mane 4,000 mg 5:1 800 mg
Tremella 5,040 mg 20:1 252 mg
Samsoniella hepiali 2,000 mg 10:1 200 mg
Shiitake 1,000 mg 4:1 250 mg
Maitake 1,000 mg 5:1 200 mg
Reishi 1,000 mg 10:1 100 mg
Cordyceps 960 mg 20:1 48 mg
Total 7 mushrooms 15,000 mg 1,850 mg

Guarana 60 mg of which 30 mg caffeine

Reading the 15,000 mg

Mushroom equivalent or extract: the same product, two numbers.

Coffee 2.0 advertises 15,000 mg of mushrooms per cup. The brand specifies at the bottom of the page that this is a “mushroom equivalent, based on extraction ratios”. Brainstoorm states its doses in the same way. Here is how to read these numbers, ours as well as theirs.

An extract is a concentrate

A 10:1 extract means it took 10 g of dried mushroom to obtain 1 g of extract. The final powder weighs ten times less than the starting material.

The equivalent is the starting weight

When a label states “1,000 mg” with a 10:1 ratio, the cup contains 100 mg of extract. Both numbers are correct; they simply do not measure the same thing.

What to compare

Always the same column on both sides: extract against extract, or equivalent against equivalent. That is what the following table does.

The third useful number

The standardised content: the share of polysaccharides guaranteed in the extract. Brainstoorm's technical data sheet states it; the Coffee 2.0 page does not mention it.

Dosages compared

Brainstoorm and Coffee 2.0, line by line.

For each ingredient, the table gives the actual weight of extract and then, in brackets, the dried-plant equivalent shown on the label. The Brainstoorm figures are those of the coffee flavour, for a 6 g serving.

Per cup Brainstoorm coffee Coffee 2.0
Caffeine 20 mg, microencapsulated around 100 mg
Lion's mane 100 mg (1,000 mg) 800 mg (4,000 mg)
Cordyceps 250 mg (1,000 mg) 48 mg (960 mg)
Chaga 20 mg (1,000 mg) absent
Other mushrooms none 5 species, 1,002 mg (10,040 mg)
Maca 375 mg (3,000 mg) 250 mg, form not specified
Ashwagandha 40 mg of extract 160 mg, form not specified
Rhodiola in the choc version (25 mg) 100 mg (1,000 mg)
Fibre chicory 3,500 mg, acacia 889 mg inulin, amount not stated

Each recipe has its own logic. Coffee 2.0 bets on quantity: seven species, a generous dose of lion's mane, and the caffeine of a real coffee. Brainstoorm bets on balance: three selected mushrooms, five times more cordyceps extract, a good dose of maca, chaga, and five times less caffeine. Its vitamin B5, at 100% of the reference intake, contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal mental performance.

Caffeine

100 mg on one side, 20 mg on the other.

This is the real dividing line. An espresso contains around 80 mg of caffeine according to the European Food Safety Authority. With around 100 mg per serving, Coffee 2.0 therefore drinks like a strong coffee, enriched with mushrooms. The brand says so itself: the product is not recommended for children, pregnant women or people sensitive to caffeine, and it advises against drinking it late in the evening.

Brainstoorm takes the opposite approach. Each cup contains 20 mg of NewCaff® microencapsulated caffeine, coated so that it is released gradually. The coffee taste comes from roasted chicory, which contains none.

One cup a day

Coffee 2.0: 100 mg. Brainstoorm: 20 mg. The EFSA benchmark for an adult is 400 mg a day, from all sources combined.

With your usual coffees

Two espressos plus one Coffee 2.0: around 260 mg. The same two espressos plus one Brainstoorm: around 180 mg.

In the afternoon

At 20 mg, a cup of Brainstoorm after lunch weighs four times less on your evening than an espresso.

If caffeine is what matters to you, our article how many cups of coffee a day does the maths cup by cup, and coffee and anxiety sets out the signs of having too much.

Vegan, sweeteners, flavours

What the ingredient list changes day to day.

Beyond the doses, three practical points separate the two recipes.

Brainstoorm Coffee 2.0
Vegan yes, both flavours no: bovine collagen, except Premium Dark Roast
Sweetener xylitol none (Café Classique), stevia (cocoa flavours) or sucralose (Caramel Salé, Iced Coffee)
Flavours 2: coffee, choc-hazelnut 8
Number of ingredients 11, each with its dose 18, some of them without a stated dose
Manufacturing France, Toulouse area European Union

Coffee 2.0 has the edge on choice: eight flavours, where Brainstoorm offers only two. Brainstoorm has the edge on simplicity: a short recipe, with no ingredients of animal origin, and the same mushrooms in both flavours.

Which one to choose

Ask yourself just one question: how much caffeine do you want?

If the answer is “as much as before”, Coffee 2.0 is a serious product, transparent about its ratios, and you will not go wrong. If the answer is “less”, you are exactly the person we created Brainstoorm for: the taste and the ritual of a morning coffee, without the racing heart at 10 am or the slump at 3 pm.

  • 20 mg of caffeine per cup, released gradually, to keep the ritual without the jitters.
  • Three mushrooms from the fruiting body, 1,000 mg of equivalent each, with the dose of extract known for every line.
  • 3,000 mg of maca equivalent and 6 mg of vitamin B5, which contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
  • Vegan recipe, with no animal collagen, made in France.
  • No mushroom taste: roasted chicory brings the roundness and bitterness of a coffee.
  • 60-day money-back guarantee: you taste, you decide.

More than 50,000 people have already replaced one of their cups with Brainstoorm, and rate it 4.8 out of 5.

Before starting either one

  • Both products contain caffeine and are not recommended for children or for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
  • Brainstoorm is not recommended if you have a thyroid, liver or heart condition: ask your doctor for advice.
  • A food supplement is not a substitute for a varied diet. Do not exceed the stated daily dose.
