Mushroom coffee
Capsule or powder? Choose the capsule if you want the quickest routine and an identical dose in every cup, in a Nespresso® Original compatible machine. Choose the powder if you like to measure it yourself, vary your drinks, hot or cold, and pay less per cup. At Mush n Go, it is the same recipe in two formats.
Brainstoorm Coffee
Our most concentrated mushroom coffee: 6,040 mg of actives per cup, including Lion's Mane, Cordyceps and Chaga at 1,000 mg each and 3,000 mg of Maca, with 20 mg of NewCaff® caffeine.

Capsule or powder: head to head.
Mushroom coffee was first sold as a powder, by the spoonful. The capsule changes the routine, not the intention: drinking a coffee that contains more than coffee. Before going into detail, here are the differences that really matter day to day.
| Powder | Capsule | |
|---|---|---|
| The routine | A spoon, water or milk, a frother | A capsule, a button, thirty seconds |
| The dose | Whatever your spoon holds, more or less heaped | Identical in every cup |
| The drinks | Coffee, latte, iced, plant milk | Short or long coffee, with its crema |
| The equipment | A cup and, ideally, a frother | A Nespresso® Original compatible machine |
| Price per cup | The lowest | A little higher: you pay for the dosing and the packaging |
| On the move | A pouch that travels anywhere, even without a machine | Any compatible machine becomes yours |
In short: powder wins on flexibility and price, the capsule on speed and consistency. Many of our customers will keep both, the capsule at the office and the powder at home.
Coffee capsule formats
Not all capsules are equal.
"Coffee capsules" is one of the most common coffee searches. Behind the word, though, there are several systems that are not compatible with one another. Before buying any capsule, check your machine's format first.
Nespresso® Original
The most widespread format. Since the early 2010s, many brands have offered compatible capsules, in aluminium, plastic or compostable material. It is the format of Mush Caps.
Nespresso® Vertuo
Larger, dome-shaped capsules, read by a barcode. They are not interchangeable with the Original format, and compatible capsules for it are rare.
Dolce Gusto® and Tassimo®
Two separate systems, designed for milky drinks and large cups. Their capsules or discs do not fit any Nespresso® machine.
Soft pods
Filter-paper pads for pod machines such as Senseo®. These are pods, not capsules, and the coffee is less tightly packed.
Another frequent question: the difference between aluminium, plastic and compostable capsules. Aluminium protects coffee very well from air and light, which matters for a recipe containing mushroom extracts. Plastic is lighter but less protective. Compostable is a good idea on paper, provided the product keeps well and your local collection accepts it.
Finally, not all compatible capsules give the same result in every machine. A well-designed capsule pierces properly, ejects without forcing and gives a consistent crema. That is the first quality criterion, even before taste.
What is in the cup
Mushroom coffee, in practice.
Mushroom coffee does not taste of button mushrooms. It is made with extracts of so-called functional mushrooms, dried and ground to a powder, mixed into a base that tastes of coffee. If the subject is new to you, our article what is mushroom coffee? covers the basics.
Our recipes contain three mushrooms and some plants, each with its own role:
- Lion's Mane, the mushroom associated with focus.
- Cordyceps, for energy and endurance, with no added caffeine.
- Chaga, the birch mushroom, rich in antioxidants.
- Maca, a root from the Andes, for vitality.
- ashwagandha, the plant associated with calm and stress management.
The base depends on the format. Brainstoorm powder combines these actives with chicory and 20 mg of NewCaff® microencapsulated caffeine per cup. Mush Caps uses the same recipe, scaled to 5 g per capsule: 5,032 mg of featured actives, namely 2,500 mg of maca, 833 mg each of Lion's Mane, Cordyceps and Chaga and 33 mg of ashwagandha, as dry equivalent, on a base of roasted chicory, with 17 mg of NewCaff® caffeine per capsule. Other ingredients: acacia fibre, coffee flavouring.
So the real question is not "capsule or powder" but "how many actives, and which ones". A mushroom coffee is judged first on its stated composition, in milligrams. We have detailed these criteria in the 6 criteria of a real mushroom coffee.
The strengths of powder
Powder, for those who like to measure.
Powder is the original mushroom coffee format, and it has serious arguments. It is the most flexible format: you adjust the strength, change drinks with the seasons and need no machine at all.
- A generous dose: 6 g per cup of Brainstoorm Coffee, for 6,040 mg of actives.
- Every kind of drink: black coffee, oat milk latte, iced in summer, in a shaker after sport.
- Two flavours: Coffee, and Chocolate-Hazelnut, which adds rhodiola and cocoa for 6,225 mg of actives in an 8 g serving.
- The lowest price per cup, with 30 servings per pouch.
- No equipment required: a cup, hot water, and it is ready.
Its limits are just as clear. You need a spoon and a little time, the powder can clump if poured into water that is too hot without stirring, and the pouch must be closed properly to stay dry. And let's be honest: a spoonful is never exactly the same from one morning to the next.
Who is it for? People who make their coffee at home, who like milky or iced drinks, and who want the most complete dose in the range. It is also the format to choose if you do not have a capsule machine.
The strengths of capsules
The capsule, for those who have no time.
The capsule answers a request we have been hearing since Brainstoorm launched: "your coffee, but in my machine". You already have the machine, you keep your routine. What changes is what is inside the capsule.

- The same dose in every cup: 5 g per capsule, with no spoon or scales.
- Thirty seconds, short or long coffee, depending on the strength you like.
- A real espresso crema, without a milk frother.
- A recipe protected from air in an aluminium capsule, down to the last cup.
- At the office, at friends', at a hotel: any compatible machine will do.
The limits? You need a machine in the right format, the drinks are less varied than with powder, and the price per cup is a little higher. The capsule is a comfort format: you pay for consistency and speed.
Who is it for? Rushed mornings, the office, people who already have a machine and do not want to change their habits. And powder fans who want to keep the recipe without the spoon.
Caffeine, format by format
How much caffeine is in your cup?
It is often the first question, and the right one. Mushroom coffee is not decaf: it contains a little caffeine, as a supporting act, and relies on mushrooms and plants for the rest. Here are the useful benchmarks.
A classic espresso · about 80 mg
That is the ballpark for a short cup of capsule or percolator coffee. The actual amount varies with the coffee variety, the grind and the length of the cup.
Brainstoorm powder · 20 mg per cup
NewCaff® microencapsulated caffeine, designed to be released gradually rather than all at once. Same amount in the Chocolate-Hazelnut version.
Mush Caps · 17 mg per capsule
The same NewCaff® caffeine, in a supporting role. Energy also comes from cordyceps and maca, and ashwagandha supports calm.
The EFSA view · 400 mg a day
The European Food Safety Authority considers that up to 400 mg of caffeine a day, and 200 mg in a single dose, raise no safety concerns for healthy adults. During pregnancy, the benchmark is 200 mg a day.
In practice, switching from an espresso to a cup of Brainstoorm or a Mush Caps cuts your caffeine by about four, without giving up the ritual. It is one of the reasons people choose us to replace coffee in the afternoon. The full source is at the bottom of the page.

Which machine?
Is your machine compatible?
The answer is often clear at a glance: if your machine takes Nespresso® Original capsules, small and bell-shaped, it takes Mush Caps. Here are the brands and models concerned.
| Brand | Compatible | Example models |
|---|---|---|
| Nespresso® Original | Yes | Essenza Mini and Plus, Pixie, CitiZ, Inissia, Lattissima, Creatista, Expert, Prodigio, Maestria, Le Cube |
| Krups, Magimix, De'Longhi | Yes, on their Nespresso® Original models | Machines sold under Nespresso® licence |
| Sage, KitchenAid, L'OR Barista | Yes, on their Original format models | Machines that take Original capsules |
| Wacaco | Yes | Minipresso and Nanopresso, for camping or travel |
| Nespresso® Vertuo | No | Different capsule shape, read by barcode |
| Dolce Gusto®, Tassimo®, Senseo® | No | Other capsule or pod systems |
Nespresso® is a registered trademark of a third party, unconnected with Mush n Go. If you have a Vertuo machine or another system, Brainstoorm powder remains the simplest solution.
How to prepare it
The right moves, format by format.
Mushroom coffee is made like coffee, give or take a few details. Those details make the difference between a decent cup and one you will want to make again.
With powder, three steps are enough:
The dose
A 6 g serving of Brainstoorm Coffee, or 8 g for Chocolate-Hazelnut, in your cup.
The liquid
A cup of hot but not boiling water, or milk, dairy or plant-based, hot or cold.
The mix
A milk frother for ten seconds, for a smooth texture and fine foam.
With the capsule, everything is already dosed. Slip it into the machine and choose a short coffee for an intense espresso, or a long coffee for a milder cup. For a latte, pour the espresso over hot frothed milk. For iced coffee, brew the capsule straight over ice cubes, then top up with a little cold milk.
Two tips for both formats: drink it in the morning or early afternoon, like any coffee, and give yourself two to three weeks of regular routine before judging. Mushrooms are not judged on a single cup.
Packaging and recycling
What about the impact of capsules?
It is the most common criticism of capsules, and it deserves a real answer. A capsule is one piece of packaging per cup. Powder is one piece of packaging for 30 cups. On this point, powder wins, no contest.
For capsules, the choice of material matters. Aluminium is a metal that recycles very well, provided it is collected. In many areas, recycling rules now cover small metal packaging: check your local rules, or take your capsules to a dedicated collection point if there is one near you.
Our tips to limit the impact
- Keep the capsule for the moments when it really saves you time, and keep the powder at home.
- Let used capsules cool before throwing them away, and follow your local recycling rules.
- Choose boxes of several capsules rather than single purchases.
- Make your machine last: regular descaling means you will not need to replace it.
Which format for you?
Five profiles, five answers.
There is no best format in absolute terms, only the format that fits your days. Here is how to decide based on your profile.
| Your profile | Our advice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You have a Nespresso® Original machine | Mush Caps | You keep your routine, without buying anything else |
| You love lattes and iced coffees | Brainstoorm powder | More freedom over the drink and the texture |
| You are watching your budget | Brainstoorm powder | The lowest price per cup in our coffee range |
| You drink your coffee at the office | Mush Caps | A box in the drawer, thirty seconds per cup |
| You want to taste before choosing | Coffee Pack | Both powder flavours, then the capsules on 2 October |
And if you are still unsure, nothing stops you alternating. The recipe is the same: what changes is the moment and the routine. Here is what our customers say about the Brainstoorm recipe, in its classic format (reviews translated from French):
"I was sceptical and in the end I'm won over. Less caffeine and yet I'm full of energy and my mood stays steady"
★★★★★ Maïté S., 4 April 2026
"I used to get stomach aches with normal coffee, now my stomach has gone down and I'm in great shape"
★★★★★ Sonia L., 27 August 2026
Precautions
What to know before you start.
Mushroom coffee remains a supplement to your diet, with a few common-sense rules, whatever the format. To find out more, read our article on the side effects of mushrooms and adaptogenic plants.
Capsule or powder, the precautions are the same.
- During pregnancy and breastfeeding, ask your doctor before taking functional mushrooms or ashwagandha.
- If you are on medication, particularly for the thyroid, blood pressure or blood clotting, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
- Count the caffeine across your whole day: tea, soft drinks, chocolate and other coffees all add up.
- Follow the dose shown on the packaging and keep products out of reach of children.
Your questions
Everything people ask us about mushroom coffee capsules.
Is there mushroom coffee in capsules?
Yes. Mush Caps, our mushroom coffee in a capsule compatible with Nespresso® Original, arrives on 2 October. It uses the Brainstoorm Coffee recipe: Lion's Mane, Cordyceps, Chaga, maca and ashwagandha, with 17 mg of caffeine per capsule.
Mushroom coffee in capsules or powder: which is more concentrated?
The powder serving is heavier: 6 g per cup of Brainstoorm Coffee, compared with 5 g per capsule. Powder is therefore the most generous format, and the capsule the most consistent, since the dose never varies.
Are Mush Caps capsules compatible with my machine?
Yes, if your machine takes Nespresso® Original capsules: Nespresso®, Krups, Magimix, De'Longhi, Sage, KitchenAid, L'OR Barista or Wacaco on their Original format models. They do not work in Vertuo, Dolce Gusto®, Tassimo® or Senseo® machines.
How much caffeine is in a mushroom coffee capsule?
17 mg of microencapsulated caffeine per Mush Caps capsule, and 20 mg per cup of Brainstoorm powder. A classic espresso contains about 80 mg.
Does mushroom coffee taste of mushrooms?
No. Our recipes taste of coffee, rounded and intense, thanks to roasted chicory and coffee flavouring. And if you do not like the taste, you have a 60-day money-back guarantee.
Are aluminium capsules recyclable?
Aluminium recycles very well, provided it is collected. Follow your local recycling rules, which increasingly accept small metal packaging, or drop your capsules at a dedicated collection point.
Can you make a latte with a mushroom coffee capsule?
Yes. Brew the capsule as a short coffee, then add hot frothed milk, dairy or plant-based. For iced coffee, brew it over ice cubes and top up with cold milk.
Is Mush Caps sweetened?
No, there is no added sugar.
Do you need a subscription for the capsules?
No. Mush Caps is bought as a one-off, with a 60-day money-back guarantee. The monthly subscription (−30%) remains an option on our courses, our packs and Brainstoorm, with full terms on the product page.
Where can I find mushroom coffee in capsules?
On mushngo.com, in our mushroom coffee collection, from 2 October. In the meantime, the same recipe is available as a powder with Brainstoorm Coffee.
