Dirtea review
Dirtea Coffee is a British mushroom coffee built around a single mushroom, and it does not do things by halves: 1,000 mg of organic lion's mane extract per cup, with 50 mg of caffeine. It is one of the most highly dosed lion's mane products we have compared. Brainstoorm makes a broader choice: three mushrooms, maca and ashwagandha as extracts, no coffee, and 20 mg of caffeine. Here are the two labels, line by line.
Who is writing: Mush n Go makes Brainstoorm, a direct competitor of Dirtea. This page compares what each brand states on its website and, for Brainstoorm, the technical data sheet from our contract manufacturer. Figures recorded on 6 October 2026. We have no connection with Dirtea.
Brainstoorm coffee flavour
Lion's mane, cordyceps and chaga from the fruiting body, maca, ashwagandha and roasted chicory. The taste of coffee, without the jitters.

One mushroom at a high dose, or three mushrooms and two plants.
Dirtea and Brainstoorm answer two different questions. Dirtea answers “which coffee is richest in lion's mane?”: half of its spoonful, or nearly, is extract of that one mushroom. Brainstoorm answers “what can I replace my coffee with?”: a coffee-free recipe, where three mushrooms and two plants share the cup.
- Brainstoorm is for you if you want as little caffeine as possible (20 mg), want lion's mane, cordyceps and chaga together with maca and ashwagandha, and want to be able to taste it for 60 days.
- Dirtea is for you if lion's mane is what interests you above all, if you want certified organic and an extract standardised for beta-glucans, and real coffee in your cup.
- On price, Dirtea is cheaper per cup: around €0.75 as a one-off purchase and €0.52 on subscription, versus €1.42 and €0.78 for Brainstoorm. Its pouch contains 60 small servings.
What is Dirtea
A London brand, specialising in organic mushrooms.
Dirtea is a British brand of mushroom powders, based in London and sold online. Alongside its pure extracts, it offers several drinks: coffee, matcha, cocoa, chai. Its Dirtea Coffee also comes in collagen and creatine versions. The brand states that it manufactures in the UK and is certified organic by the Organic Food Federation.
The ingredients in detail
What is in one serving of Dirtea Coffee.
Dirtea's ingredients list gives the share of coffee and the share of extract, and the brand spells out the essentials: fruiting body, dual extraction, more than 40% beta-glucans. It is a demanding label. Here is what we recorded for a 2.5 g serving.
| Ingredient | Per serving | Share of the recipe | Detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organic Arabica coffee | 1,400 mg | 56% | 50 mg of caffeine |
| Organic lion's mane extract | 1,000 mg | 40% | fruiting body, more than 40% beta-glucans |
| Maca | 50 mg | root powder | |
| Vitamin B5 | 32% of the reference intake | ||
| Vitamins B1, B2, B6 | 91%, 71% and 71% of the reference intake | ||

Extract or equivalent
Two numbers for the same mushroom: how to read them.
On a mushroom coffee label, the same ingredient can appear with two very different weights. Both are correct; they simply do not measure the same thing. Dirtea shows a weight of extract, with no ratio; Brainstoorm shows dried-plant equivalents. To compare fairly, we give both figures on the Brainstoorm side.
The extract is what is in the cup
An extract is a concentrate. With a 10:1 ratio, it took 10 g of dried mushroom to obtain 1 g of powder.
The equivalent is the starting weight
“1,000 mg dry equivalent” with a 10:1 ratio means 100 mg of extract in the cup.
The part of the mushroom matters
The fruiting body is the mushroom itself; the mycelium is its network of filaments. Both are used, and a clear label says which.
The rule for comparing
Always the same column on both sides: extract against extract, equivalent against equivalent. That is what the following table does.
Dosages compared
Brainstoorm and Dirtea, line by line.
For Brainstoorm, the table gives the actual weight of extract and then, in brackets, the dried-plant equivalent. For Dirtea, the stated weight of extract. Brainstoorm coffee flavour: 6 g serving. Dirtea Coffee: 2.5 g serving.
| Per cup | Brainstoorm coffee | Dirtea Coffee |
|---|---|---|
| Caffeine | 20 mg, microencapsulated | 50 mg, from Arabica coffee |
| Lion's mane | 100 mg of extract (1,000 mg), 30 mg of polysaccharides | 1,000 mg of extract, more than 40% beta-glucans |
| Cordyceps | 250 mg of extract (1,000 mg) | absent |
| Chaga | 20 mg of extract (1,000 mg) | absent |
| Maca | 375 mg of extract (3,000 mg) | 50 mg of powder |
| Ashwagandha | 40 mg of extract | absent |
| Vitamin B5 | 6 mg, 100% of the reference intake | 32% of the reference intake |
| Other B vitamins | none | B1, B2, B3, B6, B7, B9, B12 |
| Base | roasted chicory 3,500 mg, acacia 889 mg | organic Arabica coffee 1,400 mg |
| Part of the mushroom | fruiting body | fruiting body |
| Organic | no | yes, certified |
| Sweetener | xylitol | none |

On lion's mane, Dirtea is very clearly ahead: ten times more extract than Brainstoorm, organic, and with a stated standardisation. If this is the mushroom you are looking for, that is a strong argument. Brainstoorm plays the complementarity card: cordyceps and chaga alongside the lion's mane, maca as a concentrated extract where Dirtea uses 50 mg of powder, ashwagandha, and three times more vitamin B5. At 100% of the reference intake, this vitamin contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal mental performance.
Caffeine
50 mg on one side, 20 mg on the other.
Dirtea Coffee contains 50 mg of caffeine per serving, supplied by 1.4 g of Arabica coffee. That is clearly less than an espresso, which has around 80 mg according to the European Food Safety Authority: the brand describes it as a lighter coffee, and that is accurate.
Brainstoorm contains no coffee. Each cup provides 20 mg of NewCaff® microencapsulated caffeine, coated so that it is released gradually, and its taste comes from roasted chicory.
One cup a day
Dirtea Coffee: 50 mg. Brainstoorm: 20 mg. The EFSA benchmark for an adult is 400 mg a day, from all sources combined.
With your usual coffees
Two espressos plus one Dirtea Coffee: around 210 mg. The same two espressos plus one Brainstoorm: around 180 mg.
In the afternoon
At 20 mg, a cup of Brainstoorm after lunch weighs four times less on your evening than an espresso.
If caffeine is what matters to you, our article how many cups of coffee a day does the maths cup by cup, and coffee and anxiety sets out the signs of having too much.

Which one to choose
Go all in on lion's mane, or build a complete cup?
If your priority is to get as much lion's mane as possible, organic, Dirtea Coffee is a serious choice and you will not go wrong. If you are looking instead to replace your coffee with a complete cup, lighter in caffeine, without the racing heart at 10 am or the slump at 3 pm, you are the person we created Brainstoorm for.
- 20 mg of caffeine per cup, released gradually: two and a half times less than Dirtea Coffee.
- Three mushrooms in the same cup: lion's mane, cordyceps and chaga from the fruiting body, 1,000 mg of equivalent each.
- Two plants as extracts: 375 mg of maca extract, i.e. 3,000 mg of root equivalent, and ashwagandha.
- 6 mg of vitamin B5 in a single cup, i.e. 100% of the reference intake: it contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
- No mushroom taste: roasted chicory brings the roundness and bitterness of a coffee.
- 60-day money-back guarantee: you taste, you decide.
More than 50,000 people have already replaced one of their cups with Brainstoorm, and rate it 4.8 out of 5.
