Naturtreu review

Naturtreu's Pilzkaffee is a German instant coffee enriched with four mushrooms: 500 mg of extracts and 94 mg of caffeine per cup, at a very keen price. It is a real coffee, with the caffeine of a real coffee. Brainstoorm takes the opposite approach: 20 mg of caffeine, almost five times less, with maca and ashwagandha on top of the mushrooms. Here are the two labels, line by line.

Our verdict in brief

An enriched coffee on one side, a coffee alternative on the other.

Naturtreu and Brainstoorm sit on the same shelf, but they are not the same kind of drink. Naturtreu's Pilzkaffee is first and foremost coffee: more than half of the cup is coffee extract. Brainstoorm contains no coffee at all: its taste comes from roasted chicory, and its caffeine is added in a small dose.

  • Brainstoorm is for you if cutting down on caffeine is exactly what you are after (20 mg), if maca and ashwagandha interest you, and if you want 60 days to make up your mind.
  • Naturtreu is for you if you want to keep a real, fully caffeinated coffee, simply enriched with mushrooms, with a very short ingredient list and a low price.
  • On price, Naturtreu is clearly cheaper: €0.67 per cup, versus €1.42 for Brainstoorm as a one-off purchase and €0.78 at the best subscription rate.

The ingredients in detail

What is in a cup of Naturtreu Pilzkaffee.

Naturtreu's label is a model of clarity: six lines, each with its weight, and a total that adds up exactly to the 5 g serving. The brand gives the weight of extract for each mushroom and, for three of them, the extraction ratio.

Ingredient Extract Ratio Mushroom equivalent
Coffee extract 2,750 mg of which 94 mg caffeine
Coconut milk powder 1,750 mg
Reishi 150 mg 14:1 2,100 mg
Chaga 150 mg 5:1 750 mg
Lion's mane 100 mg 30:1 3,000 mg
Cordyceps 100 mg not stated —
Total 4 mushrooms 500 mg

Source: product page and label of the “Pilzkaffee” on naturtreu.de, recorded on 6 October 2026. The “mushroom equivalent” column is our own calculation: weight of extract multiplied by the ratio. The brand states that it uses the fruiting body; it does not publish a polysaccharide content.

Extract or equivalent

Two numbers for the same mushroom: how to read them.

On a mushroom coffee label, the same ingredient can appear with two very different weights. Both are correct; they simply do not measure the same thing. Naturtreu shows weights of extract and its ratios; Brainstoorm shows dried-plant equivalents. To compare fairly, we give both figures on both sides.

The extract is what is in the cup

An extract is a concentrate. With a 10:1 ratio, it took 10 g of dried mushroom to obtain 1 g of powder.

The equivalent is the starting weight

“1,000 mg dry equivalent” with a 10:1 ratio means 100 mg of extract in the cup.

The part of the mushroom matters

The fruiting body is the mushroom itself; the mycelium is its network of filaments. Both are used, and a clear label says which.

The rule for comparing

Always the same column on both sides: extract against extract, equivalent against equivalent. That is what the following table does.

Dosages compared

Brainstoorm and Naturtreu, line by line.

For each mushroom, the table gives the actual weight of extract and then, in brackets, the dried-mushroom equivalent. Brainstoorm coffee flavour: 6 g serving. Naturtreu Pilzkaffee: 5 g serving.

Each recipe has its own logic. Naturtreu starts from a coffee and adds four mushrooms to it, reishi among them, for 500 mg of extracts in total. Brainstoorm starts from the active ingredients and builds the cup around them: three mushrooms, two and a half times more cordyceps extract, a good dose of maca, ashwagandha, a chicory base, and caffeine brought down to 20 mg. Its vitamin B5, at 100% of the reference intake, contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal mental performance.

Caffeine

94 mg on one side, 20 mg on the other.

This is the real dividing line. An espresso contains around 80 mg of caffeine according to the European Food Safety Authority. With 94 mg per cup, Naturtreu's Pilzkaffee therefore sits slightly above that: it is a coffee in its own right, and its label says as much by advising against it for pregnant and breastfeeding women and for under-18s.

Brainstoorm was designed for people who want to do exactly that: ease off. Each cup contains 20 mg of NewCaff® microencapsulated caffeine, coated so that it is released gradually. The coffee taste comes from roasted chicory, which contains none.

One cup a day

Naturtreu Pilzkaffee: 94 mg. Brainstoorm: 20 mg. The EFSA benchmark for an adult is 400 mg a day, from all sources combined.

With your usual coffees

Two espressos plus one Naturtreu Pilzkaffee: around 254 mg. The same two espressos plus one Brainstoorm: around 180 mg.

In the afternoon

At 20 mg, a cup of Brainstoorm after lunch weighs four times less on your evening than an espresso.

If caffeine is what matters to you, our article how many cups of coffee a day does the maths cup by cup, and coffee and anxiety sets out the signs of having too much.

Which one to choose

Keep your caffeine, or divide it by five?

If you like your coffee just as it is and simply want to slip some mushrooms into it, Naturtreu's Pilzkaffee does the job very well, at a low price, and you will not go wrong. If what you are after is the ritual of a morning coffee without the racing heart at 10 am or the slump at 3 pm, you are the person we created Brainstoorm for.

  • 20 mg of caffeine per cup, released gradually: almost five times less than Naturtreu's Pilzkaffee.
  • Three mushrooms from the fruiting body, 1,000 mg of equivalent each, including 250 mg of cordyceps extract.
  • Two extra plants: 3,000 mg of maca equivalent, plus ashwagandha, neither of which is in the Naturtreu recipe.
  • 6 mg of vitamin B5 in a single cup, i.e. 100% of the reference intake: it contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
  • No mushroom taste: roasted chicory brings the roundness and bitterness of a coffee.
  • 60-day money-back guarantee: you taste, you decide.

More than 50,000 people have already replaced one of their cups with Brainstoorm, and rate it 4.8 out of 5.
