Blendea review

Supercoffee, from the Czech brand Blendea, is a cinnamon instant coffee with added chicory and three organic whole ground mushrooms: reishi, chaga and lion's mane, with 55 mg of caffeine per cup. The recipe is transparent and made in the Czech Republic. Brainstoorm makes two different choices: concentrated extracts rather than mushroom powder, and no coffee, hence only 20 mg of caffeine. Here are the two recipes, line by line.

Our verdict in brief

Whole ground mushrooms, or concentrated extracts.

Blendea and Brainstoorm agree on the essentials: an instant powder, chicory, three mushrooms. They part ways on the method. Blendea grinds the whole mushroom and adds it to coffee. Brainstoorm uses extracts, that is, concentrated mushrooms, on a coffee-free base.

  • Brainstoorm is for you if you want concentrated extracts, little caffeine (20 mg), maca and ashwagandha on top of the mushrooms, and 60 days to change your mind.
  • Blendea is for you if you prefer the whole mushroom to the extract, organic mushrooms, a real coffee taste lifted by cinnamon, and an affordable price.
  • On price, Blendea is cheaper: around €0.75 per cup in the Czech Republic, versus €1.42 for Brainstoorm as a one-off purchase and €0.78 on a three-month subscription.

The ingredients in detail

What is in one serving of Supercoffee.

Blendea gives its recipe to the nearest per cent, and the total does add up to 100%. The brand also spells out a point that many leave vague: its mushrooms are ground whole; they are not extracts. Here is what that represents for a 3.3 g serving.

Ingredient Stated share Per 3.3 g serving Form
Instant coffee 55% 1,815 mg Arabica and Robusta
Chicory 30% 990 mg root
Organic reishi 5% 165 mg ground mushroom
Organic Ceylon cinnamon 5% 165 mg spice
Organic chaga 3% 99 mg ground mushroom

Extract or equivalent

Two numbers for the same mushroom: how to read them.

On a mushroom coffee label, the same ingredient can appear with two very different weights. Both are correct; they simply do not measure the same thing. That is the whole point of this comparison: Blendea states a weight of ground mushroom, Brainstoorm a weight of extract and its dried-mushroom equivalent.

The extract is what is in the cup

An extract is a concentrate. With a 10:1 ratio, it took 10 g of dried mushroom to obtain 1 g of powder.

The equivalent is the starting weight

“1,000 mg dry equivalent” with a 10:1 ratio means 100 mg of extract in the cup.

The part of the mushroom matters

The fruiting body is the mushroom itself; the mycelium is its network of filaments. Both are used, and a clear label says which.

The rule for comparing

Always the same column on both sides: extract against extract, equivalent against equivalent. That is what the following table does.

Dosages compared

Brainstoorm and Blendea, line by line.

For Brainstoorm, the table gives the actual weight of extract and then, in brackets, the dried-mushroom equivalent. For Blendea, the weight of ground mushroom calculated from the recipe. Brainstoorm coffee flavour: 6 g serving. Supercoffee: 3.3 g serving.

Per cup Brainstoorm coffee Blendea Supercoffee
Caffeine 20 mg, microencapsulated around 55 mg, from the instant coffee
Lion's mane 100 mg of extract (1,000 mg) 66 mg of ground mushroom
Chaga 20 mg of extract (1,000 mg) 99 mg of ground mushroom
Cordyceps 250 mg of extract (1,000 mg) absent
Reishi absent 165 mg of ground mushroom
Maca 375 mg of extract (3,000 mg) absent
Ashwagandha 40 mg of extract absent
Vitamin B5 6 mg, 100% of the reference intake absent
Base roasted chicory 3,500 mg, acacia 889 mg instant coffee 1,815 mg, chicory 990 mg
Cinnamon absent 165 mg
Organic no organic mushrooms and cinnamon
Sweetener xylitol none

Both approaches have their merits. Blendea explains that it grinds the whole mushroom to keep all of its components. Brainstoorm opts for the extract, which concentrates the mushroom: its 100 mg of lion's mane extract correspond to 1,000 mg of dried mushroom, where a serving of Supercoffee contains 66 mg. Brainstoorm adds cordyceps, maca and ashwagandha. Its vitamin B5, at 100% of the reference intake, contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal mental performance.

Caffeine

55 mg on one side, 20 mg on the other.

Supercoffee contains around 55 mg of caffeine per serving, from its instant coffee. That is slightly less than an espresso, which has around 80 mg according to the European Food Safety Authority. The brand recommends it once or twice a day, and offers a caffeine-free version.

Brainstoorm contains no coffee. Each cup provides 20 mg of NewCaff® microencapsulated caffeine, coated so that it is released gradually, and its taste comes from roasted chicory.

One cup a day

Supercoffee: around 55 mg. Brainstoorm: 20 mg. The EFSA benchmark for an adult is 400 mg a day, from all sources combined.

At the maximum recommended dose

Two servings of Supercoffee: around 110 mg. Brainstoorm is taken as one cup: 20 mg.

In the afternoon

At 20 mg, a cup of Brainstoorm after lunch weighs four times less on your evening than an espresso.

Which one to choose

The whole mushroom in a coffee, or the extract in a coffee-free cup?

If you like the idea of the whole, organic mushroom in a cinnamon coffee, Supercoffee is an honest recipe and you will not go wrong. If you prefer concentrated extracts and less caffeine, without the racing heart at 10 am or the slump at 3 pm, you are the person we created Brainstoorm for.

  • 20 mg of caffeine per cup, released gradually, versus around 55 mg for Supercoffee.
  • Concentrated extracts: three mushrooms from the fruiting body, 1,000 mg of equivalent each, including 250 mg of cordyceps extract.
  • Two extra plants: 3,000 mg of maca equivalent, plus ashwagandha, neither of which is in the Blendea recipe.
  • 6 mg of vitamin B5 in a single cup, i.e. 100% of the reference intake: it contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
  • No mushroom taste: roasted chicory brings the roundness and bitterness of a coffee.
  • 60-day money-back guarantee: you taste, you decide.

More than 50,000 people have already replaced one of their cups with Brainstoorm, and rate it 4.8 out of 5.
